Crazy Love

I agree with Steven Pinker when he says love can be like an addiction. Some people have too much of an addiction though. If one person in a relationship feels a danger of being abandoned, they might resort to violence to try and fix the problem. The sad part about this is that it is starting early in some people’s lives. I have seen this too many times in high school. It ended up with one of them hurting their partner, someone else, or they end up hurting themselves. In all, some people in love can end up being truly crazy.

Politics of Rescue

After reading this article, I definitely feel like the United States should not intervene with other countries’ affairs. I think we should fix problems in our own country first before we start fixing other people’s problems. Although I think the United States should not intervene, I see why sometimes we have to. As in the article, Walzer says people in other countries are becoming victims of ethnic hatred and tyranny. This is a time when we have to intervene because we have the resources to do so unlike other countries.

Response to War Is A Force That Gives Us Meaning

This essay does a good job of explaining the truth about the attraction people have with war and also the horror that comes with it. Hedges says that sometimes war is necessary and that war is a crusade. War can help to maintain or retain a way of life or to get rid of a dictator in some country. There is an enduring attraction with war, it gives people what we long for in life including a reason for living, purpose, and meaning. He says that there is a sense of exhilaration and glory of battle and how soldiers have a hunger for getting rid of the enemy. A lot of people do not realize that there are consequences to going to war. In war, there is a price to be paid. Many soldiers’ lives have ended and many soldiers have ended other people’s lives including innocent civilians. It seems that the attraction people have with war will always be part of them.

Response to global warming readings

I think it is ridiculous that we are only now putting caps on our carbon dioxide emissions since the U.S. is the biggest producer of carbon emissions. As the population continues to increase, we are continuing to consume more and more natural resources. It seems that no matter how we try to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions, our efforts will never be enough. Even though global warming happens slowly over time, people cannot procrastinate on taking measures to fix global warming. It seems like there is too small a number of people involved in the efforts of global warming right now to make a difference. Everybody in the world needs to start taking action to stop global warming so future generations can enjoy the world as many generations have already done.

Response: "DNA Test Gives Students Ethnic Shocks"

I think that finding what ethnic background you really are is interesting. I think it is amazing what you can find out about yourself from a simple DNA test. This article has gotten me curious about my ethnic background. It would be interesting to know exactly what percent I am of each ethnic background. For some people, the results can be shocking. Like in the article, some people thought they were more of one ethnicity than another but they found out they were wrong. If they never took the DNA test, they would have never known. They would have gone through their whole life without knowing the truth.
Today, I think people shouldn’t be caught up in what race they are and what race everyone else is. People should not judge each other by the color of their skin because that doesn’t determine who they are. Just because someone could find out information about their ethnic background, it doesn’t change them. Everyone has their own identity that isn’t determined by the color of their skin which is something everyone should remember.

Ultimate Therapy: Commercial Eugenics in the 21st Century

I think there can be a lot of good things that could come out of eugenics. Scientists could figure out what is causing a lot of problems that trouble the world. The only bad thing with eugenics is that it is available to parents to make the “perfect” child. What would people think of someone who is not “perfect”? Would they be considered inferior to the so called perfect person? It would be nice to get rid of all the bad genes before someone is born. If someone was born “perfect”, they wouldn’t have to be worried or faced with any disease they could have in the future that could complicate or shorten their lives. Instead, they could live long, carefree lives.
I think researching eugenics and exploring it seems to be becoming the next step in the scientific world. But since there hasn’t been eugenics, there has been diversity in the world due to people who are not genetically altered. What would happen to the people who have jobs specializing with people who are genetically imperfect? Would eugenics wipe out those careers? There is a lot to consider with eugenics. People just have to decide if it is a good or bad thing.

Facebook: Why I Hate It

I’ve almost always hated Facebook. I only got it because it seemed mandatory to get it after you graduate from high school. I am never really on my account. I might go on once a week maybe more only if that is how I am communicating with someone to get a project done. I don’t even have a profile picture yet even though I had my account for almost a year now. To me, it seems like everyone is in a competition to see how many friends they can get. A lot of people probably don’t even know most of their so called “friends”. For many, Facebook is an addiction. Some people log on just to see what everyone is up to and think they can get off after a couple of minutes. Once they start reading everyone’s wall and looking at their pictures, they have been on for hours without even realizing it. Also, it seems like some people never get their school work done because they are always on Facebook. Another problem with Facebook is that even employers now are looking at it to see if a person is worthy enough to get the job that they are offering. The only thing I like about Facebook is that I can see what everybody is up to and how they are doing without even talking to any of them.
